LTL Freight Dimensioning System
LTL freight class is determined by density — and density is determined by accurate dimensions. When the dimensions you declare don’t match what the carrier measures at their dock, your freight gets reclassified mid-shipment, your invoice increases, and you have little recourse to dispute it. Packizon Dim L1 gives you certified L×W×H on every LTL shipment before it leaves your facility.
How Freight Class and DIM Weight Affect LTL Billing
The NMFC freight class system classifies freight from Class 50 to Class 500 based on density, stowability, handling, and liability. Density — the primary driver — is calculated from accurate dimensions. A pallet that measures 48×40×36 inches with a 200-pound gross weight classifies very differently from one declared at 48×40×24. Even small measurement errors can push a shipment into a higher class, adding 20–40% to the freight bill.
Carriers increasingly use their own dimensioners at terminals to verify shipper-declared dims. When there’s a discrepancy, they reclassify and re-invoice — often without warning until the final invoice arrives.
Dim L1 for LTL Freight Operations
Packizon Dim L1 measures pallet and carton dimensions in under one second. The system captures certified L×W×H at your shipping dock, calculates cubic volume, and writes the data directly to your TMS or WMS for accurate freight class assignment before the carrier picks up the load.
- Measures cartons, skids, and palletised loads
- ±0.2″ certified accuracy — accepted by LTL carriers
- Automatic freight density and class calculation
- Generates measurement records for dispute resolution
- Integrates with TMS platforms for automated BOL population
Dispute Resolution Documentation
When a carrier reclassifies your freight and you believe the reclassification was wrong, you need certified measurement records to file a dispute. Dim L1 creates a timestamped dimension record for every shipment it measures. That record — showing exact L×W×H at the time of dispatch — is the documentation you need to challenge inaccurate reclassifications and recover overbilled freight charges.
For 3PLs Managing Multiple Shipper Accounts
3PLs shipping LTL freight for multiple clients need consistent dimensioning across all client accounts. Dim L1 connects to multi-client WMS environments, tagging each measurement to the correct client and shipment record. Every client benefits from accurate freight class — and your facility benefits from fewer reclassification disputes to manage.
